Set for release in November, Square's Final Fantasy IX is ready to seal the ever-popular series' legacy by hearkening back to the series' roots in an extended show of homage to everything that has made Final Fantasy synonymous with console RPGs in the mind of its vast fanbase. Already, anxious importers are having a go at it, fan FAQs in hand, a trifle too eager to endure several months' wait. Reviews of the import have been for the most part congratulatory and gushing, which is not surprising, considering the past behavior of the series' fans. Fans, at any rate, will be pleased to find that nothing much will change with Final Fantasy IX - aside from the series' obligatory annual aesthetic makeover. Though there have been numerous alterations to the skill system, all of the changes seem thematically consistent with the series as a whole, never striking out far enough so as to alienate the longtime player. And when compared to the FF VIII's unfriendly junction system, FF IX's item-based system seems quite forgiving. With part IX marking the end of the series on the PlayStation, it's not unreasonable to expect the game to be some kind of grand statement on Square's part. At any rate, you're probably harboring some expectations regarding this series closer, whether they're based in a desire for innovation or a longing for tradition. Whatever the case, most pre-PlayStation FF-fans will find the stylistic hit of nostalgia a pleasant one - a sort of reward, if you will, for their years of devotion - while those schooled by FF VII will no doubt find the "new" visual style a bit quaint and warm, yet definitely emotive, polished, and highly competent. It's with this in mind that we take a closer look at the very last Final Fantasy on the PlayStation - the console that arguably did the most for the series. In the coming weeks we'll be covering all the elements, in detail, that make Square's latest stab at an RPG a true part of the Final Fantasy series. | ||||||||||||
